Honoring the Spirit of Giving on International Day of Charity

Charity is not just an act—it’s a reflection of our shared humanity. The world comes together September 5 (today) to recognize the International Day of Charity, a moment to celebrate the selfless spirit that fuels progress and uplifts lives.

Rotarians know this well. Charity is one of the cornerstones of Rotary service. Whether it's a community food drive, a scholarship fund, or a global health initiative—our acts of charity are deliberate, compassionate, and strategic. They aren't about handouts—they're about empowerment.

This day was established to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa, a symbol of unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalized. Her life reminds us that acts of charity, no matter how small, create ripples of transformation.

Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self,” aligns seamlessly with the essence of this day. As #PeopleOfAction, we don't just write checks—we roll up our sleeves, build partnerships, and sustain projects that make measurable impact.
So today, let’s reflect on why we give, how we give, and who we lift up when we do. Let’s turn our values into visible service—rooted in ethics, driven by compassion, and led with humility.
How will you practice charity today—not just in intention, but in action?

TM Rotary efforts improve health in Guatemala

TM Rotary is busy here at home, but at our September 9 meeting, Shelly Weston and Ellen MacFarlane will take us to Central America to tell us about the impact our club has in Guatemala.

The Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Clubs established the Guatemala Medical Resources Partnership (GMRP) in 2005 to help the people living in the Department of Santa Rosa, a remote area of the country on the Pacific coast, who did not have access to adequate health care. Every year, dedicated health care providers, interpreters, and other volunteers travel at their own expense to the small village of Oliveros in Santa Rosa to provide medical, dental, vision, nutrition, and pharmacy services to the local community in desperate need of such care. In 2012, it became apparent that many of the patients also required continuing care, mostly surgery, which, because of poverty, lack of transportation, and inability to negotiate the hospital system, they were unable to access. As a result, in 2014, GMRP established the Guatemala Continuing Care Project which provides these individuals and families with the care they require. With a gift of $200, one patient is able to obtain the surgery he or she needs. To learn more go to: http://gmrp.org/
A Day to Practice Peace, Not Just Pray for It

The International Day of Peace, observed each year on September 21, is more than a date—it’s a global reminder that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, dialogue, and mutual respect.
For Rotarians, peace isn’t an abstract hope—it’s a daily practice. Through our Peace Fellowships, youth programs, community development, and conflict resolution efforts, we actively invest in the pillars that uphold lasting peace. Rotary’s commitment to “peacebuilding and conflict prevention” is not just a priority area—it’s a defining expression of who we are.

In a world filled with division, disinformation, and displacement, peace can feel distant. But real peace begins locally: in how we treat one another, how we engage in civic life, and how we build systems that include the marginalized.

This year’s global theme reminds us that peace requires action. Not only from leaders, but from everyday people—citizens, educators, volunteers, Rotarians—who are willing to build bridges where others build walls.
Let us use this day to re-commit to understanding before judgment, to service before self-interest, and to hope before cynicism. The world needs peacemakers—and Rotary has a seat ready at that table for each of us.
What will you do today to be an ambassador of peace?
